Advertising specialist uses editing in all forms of media

Karen Brokaw has her hands full with editing more than just words on a paper.

She founded Brokaw Marketing, a market research and public relations firm that uses all forms of communication, three years ago. But her experience in the business spans more than 25 years.

In an interview, Brokaw said her interest in journalism started in junior high school and blossomed when she was the editor of her school newspaper in Grand Island, Neb.

She majored in broadcasting at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and then went on to work for small news stations, where she learned that she had more of a passion for marketing and public relations.

She worked at Ayre’s Advertising for more than 23 years as an account executive, media director, shareholder and board member.  Eventually, she decided to start her own company.

“I love working with clients to see success,” she said.

Brokaw also teaches advertising courses part-time at UNL.  She is a member of the Advertising Federation of Lincoln and the Lincoln chapter of the American Marketing Association.  In 2005, she was awarded the Silver Medal Award from the Lincoln Advertising Federation.

Beyond her marketing savvy, she is also an editor for many different types of media.  She writes and edits recipes for the Nebraska Soybean Board, while also creating pamphlets to inform consumers about the health benefits of soy and running a Facebook  page with video clips and information.  She does similar work for CommonGround Nebraska, which is a group of farm women who volunteer their time to talk about farm life.

“I believe in fully integrated brand marketing and working with clients to make sure all their messages are singing the same song,” she said.  “Frequency builds by using the same core message, so I utilize all forms of communication.”

It is challenging to own your own business and be your own editor.  “You do it all … from accounting to sales to getting contracts and keeping it all running.”

Her advice to students is to do anything to build a resume for life after college:

“Get experience as soon as you can in related fields that you see yourself going into.”
