Newspaper design: What works?

Design can determine whether or not a reader stops to look at the stories and photos on a page. Good design is attractive and easy to read. It helps the reader navigate through the content.  Good design gives the reader a hierarchy, signaling which stories are most important. It includes dominant photos and headlines. Good designers know their job is to tell a story through the design. The content drives the design. They ask themselves: What’s the story? What elements do I have to tell the story?

A few years ago, the American Press Institute talked with a roundtable of experts on what works in newspaper design and what doesn’t. Read their brief comments here. Then go to the Newseum website of front pages from around the world.   Find a front page that you think really works. In the comments area for your class, describe the front page you liked and provide the link for it. Tell me why you think it worked and what made it stand out from the others. This is due by the start of class on Wednesday, Dec. 1.
