  2. Darcie Samuelson
    January 13, 2010 at 4:53 pm

Hi everyone my name is Darcie Samuelson and I am a junior this year. I am originally from Hastings, NE, but I graduated from Bennington High School which is outside of Omaha. I chose to come to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln because they have a well established journalism and advertising department and I love the town of Lincoln. My major is Agricultural Journalism with specifications in advertising and public relations. After college I would like to work in a marketing department of a larger, Midwest based agriculture company such as Pioneer or AGP.
I hope that through this class I can improve my grammar skills thus improving my writing skills, which will help me throughout the rest of my education and beyond. In elementary I was notorious for my bad spelling and over the years I have made great efforts to improve my spelling skills and I would like to continue to do so.
I come from a large family so much of my time is taken up with spending time with them. When family becomes too much I usually can be found reading a book, or hanging out with friends. I love to travel; so much of my time off from school is spent on the road. I also am into family genealogy and spend many hours on ancestry.com and in archives looking at documents. I think that all people are unique and I think my unique trait is I can be very determined but have a sense of humor to go with it.
No I am not the first in my family to attend a university but I am the first journalism/advertising major. When it comes to my knowledge of grammar I would rate myself a 5, I find it easy to forget all the rules and those tricky exceptions to the rules. Punctuation I would rate myself a 7. When it comes to AP style I think that I would rate myself a 6, I have had some training in it, but not enough to be a 10.
In the past three months I have read a couple of books. I have pretty random tastes so I don’t usually stick to one gene. Three of the books I have enjoyed are: Wicked by Gregory Maguire, The Shack by William P. Young, and Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. I read the Daily Nebraskan everyday and attempt to get my hands on the Omaha World-Herald or the Lincoln Journal Star at least once a week. I follow CNN.com and the New York Times online and I am an avid reader of Newsweek. I would have to admit that my favorite website would have to be youtube.com, I find that most everything I want to see, and things I do not, can be found on youtube.com. I have never blogged in my life but think it would be a good experience to try. As for experience in media and communications I did do reporting for my school newspaper and was editor my senior year. As of right now I have no new internships, but I am keeping my eyes open, and I do have an updated resume. See you in class!!

  3. Jordan Minnick
    January 13, 2010 at 6:03 pm

    Jordan Minnick, Freshman

    Where are you from?
Hardin, Montana; a town of 4,000 people 45 miles East of Billings, Montana, the largest city in the state (half the size of Lincoln).

Why did you come to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?
I would like to say my reason for attending UNL is solely for the prestigious journalism program, but this falls more to chance. My parents starting working for the government, specifically the Indian Health Service, in Omaha and in-state tuition is granted to immediate family. The University has always been my top college choice though, having visited older siblings on campus frequent times prior to even applying.

    What is your major?
News & editorial; I am also looking to take some advertising classes.

    Career Goals?
Since I am still dabbling in what direction I want to take with journalism, my career goal as of now is to land a job that I can honestly say I’m happy with. Having great interest in music, I wouldn’t mind ending up at a music news magazine or website.

Why are you taking this course (besides the fact it is required)? What do you hope to get out of it?
I’d like to learn more about the role of an editor and what it entails. I hope to instill professional editing skills that will be of use in jobs and my future career.

Outside interests, hobbies, avocations, things you are passionate about?
I and fond of music and enjoy going to concerts. I plan on traveling to music festival this summer (Sasquatch in Washington and Bonnaroo in Tennessee) and fall (Monolith in Colorado).

Tell me one interesting or surprising thing about you – something that makes you unique?
I was the first white person born on an Apache Indian reservation in Arizona. Not that it means anything to anyone now.

Are you the first person in your family to attend a university?
No, my parents are pharmacists and graduates of the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

On a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being top-notch, how would you rate your knowledge of grammar, punctuation and AP style?
    Grammar: 6.5
    Punctuation: 8
    AP style: 5

What books are you reading or have read in the past three months?
Boring enough, I’ve read nothing but text books. I am soon to start The Interrogative Mood: A Novel? by Padgett Powell for my English class.

What magazines, newspapers and news Web sites do you read regularly?
I read local newspapers available on campus and visit Daytotter and Pitchfork regularily.

What is your favorite Web site?
Daytrotter (www.daytrotter.com). The site features daily free downloads of artists’ studio sessions and articles to accompany them.

    Do you blog?
    No.

Do you have any media/communication experience? If so, what?
Very scant; I’ve job-shadowed an entertainment blogger.

Are you pursuing a media- related internship or job at this time?
No internships for me. I need a job though (and experience!), so I’m looking to copy edit at the Daily Nebraskan.

Do you have an updated resume in your files?
The last I updated my resume was for an interview with the Norfolk Daily News last semester.

  4. DeShaun W.
    January 13, 2010 at 9:47 pm

    DeShaun M. Wright

My name is DeShaun Wright and I was born and raised in Omaha, Neb. I came to UNL because I really enjoyed my time on campus when I came for visits while in high school. Also I like the ability to travel home to see my family as much or as little as I like because it is so close. I’m a broadcasting news major with the career goal of becoming a TV news reporter. I’m taking this class as an elective but I feel it will help me with my writing. I believe I’m a decent writer but sometimes grammar and word choice hold me back but I’m hoping I come out of this class as a better writer.
Outside of the classroom, I work at the UNL Admissions office as a multicultural recruiter. I feel that it is important for underrepresented students to know the value in a high school and college education, and know that they can be successful if they invest their time in their education. This is easier said than done because of many hindering factors. On the lighter side of things I’m a hip-hop fan and my favorite artist is Lupe Fiasco. Besides hip-hop I listen to R&B, reggae, and a wide range of rock. When it comes to sports I like to play basketball and run. For sports teams, I’m a big Yankees, Packers, and UConn Huskies basketball fan. One interesting thing about me is that I like to watch infomercials late at night but mostly on the weekend. I find a lot of the products interesting and I like jamming out to the music collection set infomercials.
I am the first person in my family to attend UNL but also the first to attend college. If I had to rate my knowledge of grammar, punctuation and AP style I would give myself a seven. The times when I do poor are when I don’t proof read. Outside of books for classes I’m not reading any books and haven’t read any in the past three months. I moderately read the news online like the NY Times, CNN, and the Washington Post on my Google RSS Reader. I just recently got into RSS feeds; which makes reading stories a whole lot easier when all the articles are in one place from different sites. My favorite Web site is the one that works and has whatever information I’m looking for at the time. I don’t blog but I read a couple.
The only media experience I have is from my journalism classes like news videography Trina and broadcast writing with Barney. I’m looking to find an internship this summer at a news station. I have a resume on file but it hasn’t been updated for about 6 months. So that’s a little bit about me but you’ll get to know be better as the semester progresses.

    Much Love,
    DeShaun

  5. Paige Yowell
    January 13, 2010 at 10:52 pm

    Your Name. Year in school.
    Paige Yowell. I’m a sophomore.

    Where are you from?
    Lincoln!

Why did you come to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?
I knew I was interested in pursuing journalism and knew that UNL had a good program, so I decided paying out of state tuition wasn’t worth it.

    What is your major?
News-editorial but I’m thinking about doubling my major to include political science.

    Career Goals?
I am interested in going to law school and being a lawyer but I know I want to work in print journalism for at least part of my life. I would love to be an editor or reporter for a magazine or newspaper. Ultimately I want to have options in terms of my career. I think both law and journalism are multifaceted and will allow me to pursue different opportunities throughout life.

Why are you taking this course (besides the fact it is required)? What do you hope to get out of it?
As weird as it sounds, I actually enjoy editing others peoples’ writing and I would like to think I’m good at it. I hope this class helps me edit my own work more thoroughly and also teach me more about AP style.

Outside interests, hobbies, avocations, things you are passionate about?
I love animals. I have three dogs, two cats and two horses. I really enjoy riding my horses and grew up taking riding lessons. I am also really interested in politics.

Tell me one interesting or surprising thing about you – something that makes you unique?
I’m a Harry Potter fanatic. I’ve read the series several times and own all of the movies.

Are you the first person in your family to attend a university?
No, both of my parents attended UNL and my mom graduated with a degree in psychology. My grandfather was also an anatomy professor at UNL.

On a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being top-notch, how would you rate your knowledge of grammar, punctuation and AP style
    6.5

What books are you reading or have read in the past three months?
I’m currently reading “The Nature of Things” by Lucretius and “Tastes of Paradise: A social history of spices, stimulants, and intoxicants” by Wolfgang Schivelbusch

What magazines, newspapers and news Web sites do you read regularly?
The New York Times is my favorite newspaper but I try to also read the Journal Star every day. I am guilty of reading a “People” magazine every once in a while. As for websites, I really like Twitter because it’s easy and fun to use.

What is your favorite Web site?
    http://twitter.com

    Do you blog?
    Not publicly.

Do you have any media/communication experience? If so, what?
Not other than one year of yearbook staff in high school.

Are you pursuing a media- related internship or job at this time?
I am looking to apply for one that’s close to home this summer.

Do you have an updated resume in your files?
    Yes.

  6. Max Olson
    January 14, 2010 at 1:48 am

Your Name, year in school: Max Olson, sophomore

Where are you from?
I was born in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and moved to Lincoln when I was 6 years old. I’ve lived here since and really had no interest in going anywhere else for college.

Why did you come to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln?

I realized in my sophomore year of high school that journalism was what I want to do for a living. I grew up in Lincoln and always liked UNL. When it came time to start thinking about colleges, I really never gave much though to my other options. I knew UNL has a strong journalism school, and that’s all I was looking for. Plus, how could I pass up the chance to go to the football games?

    What is your major?
News-Editorial. I’m still trying to figure out my concentrations, but at this point I think they’ll be political science, English and history.

Career Goals?
My goal is to be a sports journalist for the rest of my life. At this point, I’m most interested in being a beat writer for a newspaper or Web site, and there’s nothing I’d rather cover than college football. I guess I would say my goal would be to cover Husker football for as long as I can for whoever will allow me the opportunity. If we’re talking dream jobs, though, mine would be to work for Sports Illustrated and write magazine features.

Why are you taking this course (besides the fact it is required)? What do you hope to get out of it?
I’m the assistant sports editor at the Daily Nebraskan and will serve as the sports editor next year, and I’ve actually taken a liking to editing. For me, editing is not just about checking for style mistakes and misspellings. It’s about making a story as good as possible and helping a writer become better with each story they take on. I want my editing to improve as much as possible, and I look forward to doing that in this class. I want to have the ability to write a flawless story by the time I’m done with this class, and I want to learn tips on how to improve a story through thorough editing.

Outside interests, hobbies, avocations, things you are passionate about?
I enjoy writing, reading and perusing the Internet, and I especially enjoy watching movies. Lately, I’ve been really into watching seasons of TV shows on DVD, and I watched all the seasons of “30 Rock” and “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” over winter break. Now that I’m living in an apartment, I’ve enjoyed learning how to cook and have managed to master the art of boiling pasta.

Tell me one interesting or surprising thing about you – something that makes you unique?

I’m left-handed, and I’m also incapable of two vital skills. The first is whistling, and that’s something I’d really like to learn. The second is blowing bubbles with gum, and I’ve tried learning that several times. It’s never going to happen.

Are you the first person in your family to attend a university?

No, my dad graduated from Stanford.

On a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being top-notch, how would you rate your knowledge of grammar, punctuation and AP style
?
I’d say I’m an eight. I took 102 and Beginning Reporting with Carolyn Johnsen, so we really had to master that stuff.

What books are you reading or have read in the past three months?

I’m reading The Book of Basketball and have finished Meat Market, No Time Outs, To The Lighthouse, People of the Book, The Home Place and several other books for a literature class I took last semester.

What magazines, newspapers and news Web sites do you read regularly?
Magazines: Sports Illustrated, ESPN Magazine and Esquire.
Newspapers: Daily Nebraskan, Omaha World-Herald, Lincoln Journal Star.
Online: OWH and LJS Web sites, Yahoo! News, Huffington Post, occasionally CNN.

What is your favorite Web site?
The sports blog Deadspin.com, though I also enjoy Twitter and Facebook.

Do you blog?

No. I tweet occasionally, but no blogging.

Do you have any media/communication experience? If so, what?

I’ve worked at the Daily Nebraskan for three semesters now as a beat writer and assistant sports editor, and I was the sports editor and a news writer for the summer Daily Nebraskan, which came out once a week. I’m a correspondent for the Omaha World-Herald, which means I cover a number of high school and college sporting events for them that take place in and near Lincoln. I also covered college football recruiting for Rivals.com this summer and continue to work for that Web site.

Are you pursuing a media- related internship or job at this time?
Do you have an updated resume in your files?
This summer, I’m going to work on the sports desk at the World-Herald. I pursued a number of internship opportunities prior to accepting that job, so I do have a resume and it was last updated in the middle of the fall semester.
