Copy editors: A reader’s last line of defense

If you’ve never considered editing as a potential career choice, you may want to reconsider. Working as a copy editor is a great way to learn how every aspect of a newsroom works, according to Nancy Hanus. She started her career as a copy editor and worked on virtually every desk in The Detroit News newsroom – from editing to sports to business to metro and photo. Ultimately she became the director of new media, supervising the online news operation. If you’re still not sure what exactly a copy editor does, the Washington Post’s Bill Walsh suggests that “copy editors are the last of defense against bad writing.” Is it the right role for you? Do you like to play trivia games? Jane Harrigan, of the University of New Hampshire, says copy editing is like solving a puzzle. Finally Anne Glover of the St. Pete Times spells out what you need to succeed – starting with passion for the job.
